How OpenSocial Works

An Open Social application is essentially a Javascript program that runs in a “container” which provides the “Open Social Javascript API” via two Javascript namespaces: “opensocial” and “gadgets.

Google’s “Gadgets” are a kind of standardized applet. They are specified by an XML file which provides rendering.A gadget server needs to provide this “rendering” code to turn gadgets into executable Javascript code and then to run them.

How to create your own Open Social container environment

1. Integrate your site backend with Apache Shindig to have your own open social container : http://incubator.apache.org/shindig/
2. Compliance

•     The container must implement all methods in  the OpenSocial JavaScript APIs.  http://www.opensocial.org/Technical-Resources/opensocial-spec-v09/OpenSocial-Specification.html#JavaScript%20API%20Reference
• The container must satisfy the [Gadgets API Specification].
• The container must support the [RESTful Protocol Specification].
• The container may support the [RPC Protocol Specification].
• The container MUST support the OpenSocial Markup Language.

  The OpenSocial Markup language consists of [OpenSocial Templating] and [OpenSocial Markup Language Tags].

• The container MUST support Data Pipelining

  [OpenSocial Data Pipelining] is a declarative syntax for defining the data you want the container to provide to you for processing.

• Containers that support the creation of and updating AppData SHOULD provide at least 10KB of space per user per application for storage.
